Diabetes, oxidative stress, and antioxidants: a review.

Abstract
Increasing evidence in both experimental and clinical studies suggests that oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of both types of diabetes mellitus. Free radicals are formed disproportionately in diabetes by glucose oxidation, nonenzymatic glycation of proteins, and the subsequent oxidative degradation of glycated proteins. Abnormally high levels of free radicals and the simultaneous decline of antioxidant defense mechanisms can lead to damage of cellular organelles and enzymes, increased lipid peroxidation, and development of insulin resistance. These consequences of oxidative stress can promote the development of complications of diabetes mellitus. Changes in oxidative stress biomarkers, including superoxide" dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels, vitamins, lipid peroxidation, nitrite concentration, nonenzymatic glycosylated proteins, and hyperglycemia in diabetes, and their consequences, are discussed in this review. In vivo studies of the effects of various conventional and alternative drugs on these biomarkers are surveyed. There is a need to continue to explore the relationship between free radicals, diabetes, and its complications, and to elucidate the mechanisms by which increased oxidative stress accelerates the development of diabetic complications, in an effort to expand treatment options.

UCLA Study Reveals Amazing Benefits of Grape Seed Extract!
UC Davis study shows grape seed extract may be effective in reducing blood pressure
Promising results prompt second human clinical study Grape seed extract lowered the blood pressure of patients who participated in a UC Davis study of the benefits of the supplement on people with high blood pressure.
Conducted by UC Davis cardiovascular researchers, the study was the first human clinical trial to assess the effect of grape seed extract on people with metabolic syndrome, a combination of risk factors that increase the risk for heart disease, including high blood pressure, excess abdominal body weight, high blood cholesterol fats and high blood sugar. The researchers will present the results at the American Chemical Society Meeting and Exposition on March 26 in Atlanta, and at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology's 2006 meeting in San Francisco April 2.
It is estimated that 40 percent of American adults, or 50 million people, have metabolic syndrome.
The one-month study involved 24 male and female patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The patients were divided into three groups of eight. The first group received a placebo, while the second and third groups received 150 milligrams and 300 milligrams, respectively, of a new grape seed extract. All participants' blood pressure was automatically measured and recorded for 12 hours after ingestion.
"Participants in the two groups receiving grape seed extract experienced an equal degree of reduced blood pressure. The average drop in systolic pressure was 12 millimeters. The average drop in diastolic pressure was 8 millimeters," said the study's lead researcher, C. Tissa Kappagoda, professor of cardiovascular medicine and director of the Preventive Cardiology Program at UC Davis.
Kappagoda adds that the group taking 300 milligrams of grape seed extract also had reduced serum oxidized LDL cholesterol levels.
"Generally, the higher their initial oxidized LDL level was, the greater the drop by the end of the study," he said. The extract has received the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) certification from the FDA and has no known side effects.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Wow! These reductions of blood pressure were essentially equal to the effect of many dangerous prescription drugs.
According to the research done by Dr Joe Mercola, along with their benefits for blood pressure and cholesterol, grape seeds are also known to be a powerful antioxidant.
Antioxidant protection helps protect your body from premature aging, disease and decay. Antioxidants are needed to neutralize free radicals, which play a major role in the development of degenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, strokes and aging.
The antioxidant capacity of grape seed extract comes from proanthocyanidins. Scientific studies have shown that the antioxidant power of proanthocyanidins is 20 times stronger than vitamin C and 50 times stronger than vitamin E.
Another incredible benefit of grape seeds are their cancer fighting ability.
Chemicals found in grape seeds inhibited the growth of colorectal tumors in both cell cultures and in mice.
Grape seed extract has already been demonstrated to have anti-cancer effects on other tumor types, as well. The extract can "freeze" cancer cells, preventing them from growing and in some cases, causes the cancer cells to self destruct.
Not all grape seed extract is equal. Your best bet is to find a grape seed extract combined with other natural antioxidants. synergy in these combinations produces a greater antioxidant effect than the individual components alone. Here is where I buy my Nutritional Supplements and recommend that you do too: Naturally Direct!

Scientists Find McDonald's Meal Produces Disease Producing Free Radicals!
Paresh Dandona, MD, Director of the Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of Western New York and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at the Medical School of the State University of New York at Buffalo, showed that a small McDonald’s meal, 900 calories, resulted in inflammation and oxidative stress at a cellular, molecular level.
The markers Dr. Dandona and his team used to establish the presence of inflammation and oxidative stress are the same ones the body produces when it is seriously hurt.
“In the cells, we look at nuclear factor kB (NF-kappa B), which is the orchestrator of inflammation. When we get infections, it is NF-kappa B that gets stimulated,” he explains. “We were shocked to find that what infections do, food does, too.”
Disturbingly, the post-meal inflammatory reaction did not resolve quickly — study subjects still showed signs of inflammation five hours after eating.
Dr. Dandona’s research also found that people with obesity who already had a basic level of inflammation and oxidative stress had a worse reaction than people of normal weight when challenged with a fast-food meal. “Sure enough, they start from higher levels of inflammation, they achieve a much higher level, and the inflammation is much more prolonged.” The oxidative and inflammatory stress observed with meals probably contributes to atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke.
Now the good news: Some foods may protect against inflammation. Dr. Dandona and his team tested a portion of orange juice containing 300 calories against an amount of glucose containing 300 calories and found that while the glucose caused inflammation, the orange juice did not, despite the fact that it, too, is pure carbohydrate.
Their next experiment investigated what happened when subjects drank orange juice with a small McDonald’s meal. “And guess what: Orange juice neutralizes inflammation. To me, that is one of the most amazing findings in the field of nutrition today,” says Dr. Dandona. “On the one hand you have all these terrible things that cause inflammation, but if you take a certain amount of orange juice, it balances things off. That’s really remarkable.”
Part of the reason orange juice and glucose have a different impact on inflammation may be due to the nature of the type of carbohydrate: The sugar in orange juice is half fructose, and fructose is noninflammatory. But what would cause it to be anti-inflammatory? “The secret is probably in agents called flavonoids, which are what gives orange juice its yellow color,” says Dr. Dandona. “And two major flavonoids are hesperetin and naringenin, which have shown in the test tube to suppress free-radical formation and to be anti-inflammatory. Chances are that the secret is in these flavonoids.”

Wow! What a Bombshell! Why haven't we heard about this before? The doctor's work also showed that consuming fat, the other major component of a McDonald's meal, also produced free radicals.
Dr Dandona's research also showed that antioxidants in food, such as the flavonoids in the orange juice, can and do protect the body against free radical damage.

Another Antioxidant Beats Cancer!
Dr Alan Spreen,
CoQ10 is the one supplement I take every day, without fail.
New evidence of an even greater benefit is pouring in. And over the next couple of weeks, I’ll tell you about some of the amazing discoveries happening in CoQ10 research.
CoQ10 is a powerful cancer fighter.
Researchers in Tokyo gave rats a carcinogen that promotes colon cancer. The rats were divided into three groups. One group was fed a regular diet. The second group got a low dose of CoQ10. The third got a medium dose.
The results were amazing.
Both of the groups that received CoQ10 had reductions in abnormal crypts (an early sign of colon cancer) of up to 77%. Ultimately, the results of this study suggested that CoQ10 held cancer in check even when exposed to this carcinogen.1
Another study done at the University of Texas at Austin documented 10 cases of cancer patients who unexpectedly survived when treated with CoQ10.2
It works by blocking the free radicals that can ultimately damage the DNA in your cells. It also helps re-energize the immune system cells that get suppressed by cancer. It restores their ability to fight back and attack the cancer cells.
Researchers in Denmark studied a group of breast cancer patients. They gave them CoQ10, plus a combination of other antioxidants and essential-fatty acids. The result?
The entire group had a partial remission of the cancer. But here’s where things get very interesting…
Two of the patients received larger doses of CoQ10 (390 mg). Their tumors disappeared.
Here’s what the researchers said regarding one of the patients:
“After three months, the patient was in excellent clinical condition and there was no residual tumor tissue.”3
Remarkable isn’t it?
Yet CoQ10 is one of the most overlooked nutrients. The government doesn’t even have a recommended daily intake for it. And in my practice, I’ve found that most of my new patients are deficient.
The only natural source of CoQ10 is red meat, especially organ meat. But today’s commercially-raised, grain-fed beef is a poor source.
Even worse, many popular drugs – especially cholesterol-lowering drugs like statins – cause your levels of CoQ10 to plunge.
I recommend getting 400 mg of regular CoQ10 daily.
Dr Alan Spreen

Note, most people, as Dr Spreen says, are deficient in antioxidants. As Dr Lester Packer, the Dean of Antioxidant Experts says, "He who has the most antioxidants in his body will live the longest healthiest life!"
There is help. The Kangen Ionized Alkalizing Machine, recognized as a Medical Device by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, converts ordinary tap water into the most powerful antioxidant available!
What this water does is to immediately double or triple the effective amount of antioxidants in your body because it has the ability to regenerate your body's other antioxidants.
It is not well known, but when an antioxidant smashes (medical term!) a free radical, it loses its antioxidant power, even becoming a dangerous free radical itself in some cases.
For instance, Alpha Lipoic Acid or Glutathione, two lesser known antioxidants and in some cases vitamins C and E have to regenerate or rejuvenate the spent antioxidant.
However, Kangen Water has a large supply of free electrons that can rejuvenate the body's other antioxidants, thereby greatly increasing the net amount available to the body resulting in a very strong immune system and protection against radical damage to organs and structures of the body.
Once free radicals have been quelched, the body's Ph or acid alkaline balance can be addressed. In most of us, our blood's Ph balance has been put out of whack because of our diet and stress which causes it to become too acid. Excess acidity (acidosis) allows disease producing microbes and viruses to flourish, causing disease, which in turn produces more free radicals!
Once the body's Ph balance is restored and acidosis eliminated and free radicals vanquished, your body will heal itself as nature designed it to.

Study Approves AstraZeneca Blood Clot Medicine!
A new AstraZeneca P.L.C. drug to prevent blood clots in heart patients reduced their chances of dying by more than 20 percent compared with the standard treatment, new research says. (Of course, the research was PAID for by AstraZeneca!)
Researchers followed 18,624 patients worldwide from 2006 to 2008. About half the patients were taking clopidogrel, also known as Plavix, while the other half were taking the experimental AstraZeneca drug called ticagrelor, or Brilinta.
Those on Brilinta had a 4.5 percent chance of dying, versus a 5.9 percent death risk for patients on Plavix, the world's second-best selling medication made by France's Sanofi-Aventis SA and U.S. drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
Doctors also found Brilinta was safer for patients because they were less likely to have bleeding problems, one of Plavix's known side effects. Ticagrelor had its own adverse effects, including breathing and heart rhythm abnormalities.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Well, there you have it. Would you have faith in a study paid for by Dracula that showed blood loss was not serious? This will be another expensive drug with serious side effects that you will be on the rest of your life if you are prone to blood clots.
Blood clots are caused when the lining of the blood vessels are damaged, either by free radicals or acid, (ruling out external factors such as stabbings, gunshots or accidents). They also form when the body is motionless for long periods such as in a car or airplane, preventing the muscular contrations that force blood to be propelled back to the heart. As the blood pools, clots can form.
About the only time such an anti blood clot medicine would be warranted, in my opinion is when a patient is confined to bed by illness or accident.
Antioxidants and an alkaline lifestyle help avoid damage to the lining of the blood vessels and therefore the need for blood clots. Exercise will help keep the blood moving.
