Drugs for Constipation?

Constipation is one of the most frequent causes for people to visit their doctors. It is estimated that 1 in 3 Americans suffer from constipation at one time or another.

Constipation is defined as 3 or fewer bowel movements per week.

As usual, there are prescription drugs available to treat this constipation, or, in Med speak, Chronic Idiopathic Constipation. Now, doesn't that sound more like a serious illness that requires serious medicine?

One of these medicines, Zelnorm, has these friendly reminders included in the dosage instructions:

"You should not use this medication if you are allergic to tegaserod, or if you have a history of stroke or heart attack, high blood pressure, uncontrolled angina, high cholesterol or triglycerides, diabetes, depression, or anxiety.
You also should not use Zelnorm if you smoke, if you are older than 55 years, if you are overweight, or if you have a history of suicidal thoughts or actions."

Other than that, it was perfectly safe. However, it was pulled from the market in 2007 because of the frequency of heart attacks among its users!

Another drug, Amitiza, is the current Big Pharma darling and why not, a monthly prescription is $358 at my local pharmacy!

Constipation is not caused by a lack of Amatiza, Dulcolax or any other "Medicine."

It is caused by the lack of a simple, low cost nutrient from our diet.

Note: You may have something more serious than chronic constipation if you have any of these symptoms; new or worsening stomach pain, blood in your stools, ongoing diarrhea, severe stomach pain or cramps. Call your doctor immediately.
